How to Spiralize Cabbage

The question isn’t “What can I spiralize?” The question is, “What can’t I spiralize?”

Today, we’re spiralizing cabbage! While spiralizing a cabbage doesn’t yield cookable noodles, it is an easy and quick way to shred cabbage or make slaw. Let me warn you: there’s no recipe in this post, it’s just a pure “how to.” I’m saving the recipe for Monday (you’ll just have to wait!)  The smaller the cabbage, the easier, but to prove that a large cabbage can be spiralized, I’ve done just that.

As a disclaimer, the last 1/4 of the cabbage got stuck and stopped spiralizing, but I just readjusted it on the spiralizer and continued. So, don’t be alarmed if you have some trouble towards the end.  It took me less than a minute to spiralize this large head of cabbage – cheaper than buying bagged cabbage slaw and quicker (and safer!) than hand chopping it.

How to Spiralize Cabbage

First, chop off the bottom of the cabbage and remove the outer layer.

Second, load the cabbage into the spiralizer, bottom side first and use Blade A.

Third, spiralize!

It’s easy as 1-2-3 and it yields perfectly shredded cabbage, ready to be used in slaws, braised, added to salads or pickled!

  • What blade did you use?
  • Bottom side towards the blade or the spikes?
      • When I tried to spiralize the cabbage, the spikes just kept shredding the top side and the cabbage wouldn't turn, so I ended up doing it backwards. It worked fairly well then, though I'm not sure the cut of the cabbage came out the same. Tasted delicious though!
  • Wow, I never would have guessed that a cabbage would work, lol! I will be buying one to try it out! I just bought your e-book too! Can't wait to look at it.
  • Allisandra, we just tried the spiralized cabbage tonight with homemade spaghetti sauce. We've been following SCD for years and I've used thinly sliced cabbage as a "noodle" replacement for at least the last 4 years. However, tonight was the first time we were able to "twirl" our cabbage noodles around a fork! It was wonderful! Thank you for your site, ideas and recipes. So inspiring!
  • Plaintains, onions, turnips and cabbage. You're really outdoing yourself with finding ways to spiralize more vegetables. I'm going to try out the cabbage tuna and almond recipe tomorrow. I'd love for you to do a recipe with taro.
  • I'm not sure how to identify the blades. Is there a mark on them somehwhere A,B,C? Love your recipes and ideas! The beet and roasted orange salad was delicious!
  • Hi...Absolutely love your recipes. I have the 4 blade spiralizer. Can you tell me how the ABC blades compare to these blades please. I have convinced 5 of my friends to purchase one and are pinning and facebooking your recipes. Thank you.
  • I love the whole idea of spiralizing. But........I have a really hard time with the cabbage. I don't know what to do. I watched videos on YouTube -besides your video - and seems everyone can do it so easily. But for me just doesn't work. The spikes are shredding the cabbage and not being forwarded. I turned the cabbage the other way, didn't forward either. I cut it in half didn't help, I put sideways, didn't help. It just doesn't forward the cabbage. The forwarding handle actually broke so I got a new one spiralizer. It looks so simple on the videos and I just can't make it work. Any suggestions?
    • I just started spiralizing and did my first cabbage today. I used a small whole head and the single blade, not one with spikes. I did not slice the top of the cabbage like other veggies and I put it towards the blade and just pushed it in. Be sure NOT to use a blade with spikes. The core end was toward the turning handle. Otherwise, you'd be trying to slice the core if you put the core towards the blade Was able to do on one smooth move in seconds. Hope this helps.
  • If you want to make asian noodles fry the spiralized cabbage for about a minute - don't get it to the point where it goes limp - in hot oil and add the noodles to just heat them up. You can add your spiralized carrot and zucchiini too.
